Is Bad Boy Floyd Mayweather Good for the sport of boxing???
71When Floyd Mayweather sucker punched kissy huggy Champion Ortiz into a trick KO did he make boxing history in an infamous way? Should the World Boxing commissions now just accept the unsportsman like performance and dissappointing outcome of a championship fight and move on? Or should they pick their heads up out of the sand and do something to protect fight fans and fighters from unsportsman like actions that are bad for the sport of professional boxing and worst of all bad role models of behavior.
Ring Magazine Should call for rule changes in regard to unsportsman like behavior in Boxing
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is no doubt a great defensive boxer but the truth is his talk is bigger then his walk. If you hear him tell it he is the best ever. But the truth is closer to being he is actually bad for the sport of boxing. If he is so great why did he have to sucker punch his last opponent into a shameful KO before any action had resumed other then getting hugged?? Im not making any excuses for what Ortiz did. Ortiz is a nice young man outside the ring but inside the ring if he gets frustrated he starts fighting dirty so Mayweather had plenty to be upset about. If Ortiz kept his cool and tried to hit Mayweather's arms to soften them up then go to the body Ortiz would have started getting somewhere with Floyd's superb defense. Instead he throws his head to do damage and was so embarrassed with himself he couldnt stop apologizing to Mayweather so in effect he was mentally now out of the fight. It's true boxing rules state defend yourself at all times but the action had stopped and Floyd threw haymakers coming out of a hug and kiss.!!! It maybe technically legal to try and knock out a defendless opponent in a championship boxing match but where does it rank in good sportsmanship. What Ortiz did was bad and he was accordingly penalized a point but he was really dumb to stop the action while he was into his best attack of the fight. As for Floyd Mayweather I do believe what he did was actually worse then what Ortiz did. He ended a championship fight on a sour note. It's just darn right mean and dangerous to hit somebody as hard as you can when they are least expecting it. I'm guessing you'd least expect it after you kiss or hug someone. Sucker punching someone like that actually should be banned in the rules of boxing. I think it's time for Ring Magazine and Boxing Illustrated to call for the World boxing commissions to concider drawing up the Mayweather Jr. rule. He said he wanted to change boxing for the better didnt he? It would read..Striking opponent coming out of hug or kiss or stoppage of action by the ref without first touching gloves and squaring off will be considered fouling.. World Boxing commissions have to remember they have to protect the sport of boxing for the boxing fans. Boxing fans want to a see a great fight everytime and they shouldnt let the fighters rob them of that expectation. Sucker punching isnt what serious boxing fans shell out big bucks to see. Floyd talks so much he creates expectations he has trouble delivering on. He is too smart for his own good as far as this boxing fan is concerned. If Mayweather is so hip on the rules and regs of boxing why doesnt he let the commissions do proper drug tests on pacman then fight him if he comes up clean? It just might be possible the pacman has great cardio because he trains at high altitudes. As for strength they used to say Demsey had loaded gloves but the truth was he was just one strong dude for his size. I think Mayweather Jr. is something of a control freak and he doesnt like to put himself in with a fighter who he feels can actually take the fight to him. It's too bad Floyd wasnt around when Tommy Hearns was in his prime. What song and dance would have worked for him then. The chicken walk? Hearns was nothing short of a true beast in the ring. He could box and he could hit you so hard from so far away Floyd would have been at wits end to defend himself. Hearns could do it all including beating the likes of talking pink Floyd. Sugar Ray Leonard was quicker then Floyd and could also bang out dangerous opponents and take a big punch and come back with his own damaging shots to no end. Hagler would have tested Floyd's spine and it would be great fight for as long as it lasted but would he have the guts to get in the ring with Hagler in the first place? Duran would have set out to kill Floyd from the start without the kissy fits of Ortiz. He would have been alot harder to sucker punch thats for sure. My only point is if your going to call yourself the best do you really have to sucker punch a kissing hugging opponent in a championship fight??? Kids stuff really not befitting a great champion. It's bad for boxing Floyd. Hey Floyd, Hearns would probably have beaten every opponent you ever beat no Problem. Hearns would have hit your arms until you couldnt defend yourself then he would have started working you over big time. And the worst of it all for you Floyd, seems Hearns was au Natural.
If your a real boxing fan as I am you can see boxing needs a serious tune up when it comes to regulations. The big money is polluting the minds of the athletes and they are becoming bigger then the sport. The very dissappointing outcomes of the last few big fights demonstrates all too clearly that boxing fans cannot expect to see what they are paying big bucks to see..a real fight by the rules of the sport historically known as the sweet science. Seems anything goes these days and Im afraid boxing is becoming less sweet and more the sour science. Why are the world boxing commissions allowing boxing to become more like wrestling? There are rules in boxing that allow for the commission to withhold purses for fights deemed no-contests. A serious review by all world boxing commissions is what the sport needs these days to get it back on track so the fans can once again expect to see great fights a la Sugar Ray vs Tommy Hearns or Ali vs Frazier. These are the kinds of fights that make boxing history and the fighters true hall of famers. Pro Boxing is the best one on one contact sport around and great fights have only winners as long as no one gets permanently injured. So Floyd next time your in a fight try to give the fans what they came to see and keep the kids stuff at home.

Ortiz is one of the biggest hype jobs in a long time. The guy blew his chance against Maidana, feasted on smaller men then looked useless against Peterson. Berto sadly turned out to be nothing more than a fraud and Ortiz built his name on really just the win over Berto and old men.
Mayweather followed all boxing rules, Ortiz fouled end of story. Floyd is great for boxing

Hey Guy,
What Mayweather did was not honorable at all, but it was legal. What Ortiz did wasn’t honorable either, it was dumb. There are no great champions I can think of that would’ve gotten rocked and KO’ed by a sucker punch backing away looking at the ref while the fight was on.
Ortiz lost control, frustrated he wasn’t able to connect a clean power blow in his rally, and blatantly bashed Mayweather with a headbutt that busted his lip. Mayweather who hardly ever leaves a fight with bruises, was PISSED and out to retaliate. You saw it in his face. There aren’t too many boxers that would cut Ortiz a break after he just busted their lip with a dirty move. Ortiz has a problem of losing his focus. You have to watch the man in front of you---especially after the bell rings, and PROTECT YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES. Even after the first punch to the face that told Ortiz that Mayweather wasn’t interested in making out with him, Ortiz STILL didn’t pick his hands up and fight. He started walking backwards looking at the ref, got popped again and KO’ed. Mayweather snatched a cheap shot, but there’s just no way to punish a boxer for not being a nice guy.
Ortiz was loopy & irresponsible trying to force another unwarranted, awkward hug that had everyone confused, and after he already hugged him and apologized already. Not the outcome we wanted and not very nice of Mayweather…but oh well. I just don’t think there is a rule that can be made to prevent this on Mayweather’s end. However there are already several rules to prevent it on Ortiz’s end. Every fighter is responsible for himself in the ring, not dependent on the benevolence of his opponent.
